EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE – WHY IS BAD TO BE IMPULSIVE?

Just imagine when you was four years old, and somebody offered you a candy. If you’ll wait a little bit longer you will get two candies but if you don’t want to wait any longer you will get only one candy. For a small kid its a big challenge between impulse and self-control, satisfaction and abstention. This test displays child’s character and most importantly can describe even future adult decisions.

Impulse control is a key competency of emotional-social intelligence and is defined as the ability to resist an impulse to act, or delaying an impulse.  It may be a pattern of behavior or a one-time occurrence.  Either way, the impact of a lack of impulse control in the work place could make your work, relationship with colleagues/spouse more difficult. Also, when we become impulsive we don’t think rational which may lead to negative results that you might regret in the future. On the other hand, when we act on an impulse that leads to a positive outcome, it gets a different type of attention. Than we start to think that you have done something right, your positive reaction can lead to hyper active happiness which is again is not rational.

As we can see from the first example about four years old kid, it gives you idea that qualities such as patience and self control can bring you success in many different areas. Just take a look to most bosses, most of them look quite, confident and usually you will not understand if they like you or not. Its because, they understand how to control themselves, emotions and stay focus. Impulsivity and emotions can exhausted you and the quality of work and life.

How I can become less impulsive and more self controlled? Actually, it can be difficult to change it. Most of us, believes that impulsivity, emotions shows who we are and others suppose to take it or not. However, since you will know how to control your impulsivity and emotions you will become more powerful on others. Lets begin by breathing deep and not saying any word. Think about sentences and facts that you are going to response to others and don’t rush. Also, for the times when you want to fight or react loud, my suggestion leave the room and take a minute to calm down. Distraction the best medicine that can help you to take control on your self.
